The municipality Tešanj is located at the crossroads of the central and northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina and borders with the municipalities Teslić, Doboj, Doboj-Jug, Usora and Maglaj.
After the end of the war the area of the municipality was spatially reduced with 223 km² to 209 km², and after the formation of the municipality Usora the area of the municipality Tešanj is 163 km². The area of the municipality Tešanj make the populated places: Bukva, Blaževci, Bobare, Cerovac, Čaglići, Čifluk, Dobropolje, Drinčić, Džemilić Planje, Jevadžije, Jelah, Jablanica, Jelah-polje Kalošević, Karadaglije, Koprivci, Kraševo, Lepenica, Logobare, Lončari, Ljetinić, Mrkotić, Miljanovci, Medakovo, Mekiš, Novo Selo, Novi  Miljanovci, Oraš Planje, Piljužići, Potočani, Putešić, Raduša, Rosulje, Ripna, Šije, Tešanj, Trepče, Tešanjka, Tugovići, Vrela (a part), Vukovo and Hrvatinovići.

As can be seen from the data, the number of population since 1992 has constantly been changing, because in some periods Tešanj accepted and placed close to 15.000 refugees and displaced persons. A part of that population has not still returned to its pre-war residences and today they are in these areas.
Also, a part of the domicile population during the war found a refuge in other countries, mostly in the West, and is still there.
There are no accurate data based on the census, but from the existing data and estimates one can reliably conclude that the period since 1992 until today marked the distinct demographic changes at Tešanj.
